I'm a proud mama

Bird-update! It's been a while.

These two have been behaving so well lately! They've taken to preening our hair when we stick our head into the cage, they accept food from between our fingers when they're outside the cage, they're more relaxed outside the cage (well, mostly, apart from that one time that Anzu missed his landing and ended up in a tall vase. We had to tip the vase over before he realised what way was out.. Poor thing.), they have learned how to shred paper into longer and longer strips, which indicates that they're slowly leaning towards nesting behaviour...

We have had some scary, unpleasant moments too, though: Apart from that time that Anzu missed his landing (he was aiming for a roll of wrapping paper), the other day we let them fly loose for a while and then shut the cage again, but we forgot to close the top of the nesting box properly and Alar got out. I walked into the living room and she scared the living hell out of me, being on the other side of the room, all panicky, clinging to the curtains... However, we were able to lure her back to the right side of the room with nothing more than the wooden stick we use when we're playing with them outside the cage, so we got Al'ar back inside in no time at all. She's been much more outgoing since, though. It's pretty weird. Not that we're complaining, mind, just unexpected!

(I'm calling them him and her now, but we're still not sure what gender they are. Unless one starts laying eggs, I'm afraid we won't find out for a while, either! But I don't mind. )

    1. They certainly look that way, don't they? Don't let those looks deceive you though, they're a pair of mischievous monsters at times!

  2. Your birds are beautiful! I have just recently found your blog, so have not read anything about them. Are they parrots or love birds? And were they rescue birds?

    1. Thanks! And welcome! They're lovebirds, about 10 months old now, and we got them from a local pet shop. Were we to get more birds, we'll probably get them from a certified breeder, though, but this was somewhat spur-of-the-moment. We went into the pet shop to get a fish, and walked out with a reservation on these two lovies, and two days later we took them home! (not to worry, though, the boyfriend grew up with parrots as pets, so he is used to taking care of birds!)

  4. Lol - I just watched the video above and Kiwi started shrieking immediately in response to them :D We found out he was a little guy when he started ehm, humping his toys. And he started regurgitating whenever coming near to one of my fingers in order to "feed" me, which is typical male behaviour. Girls will behave like little airplanes - spread out their wings, lift up their tails and turn around in circles :-)
Anzu and Al'ar are a very handsome pair indeed! Their peachy colour got a lot more intense, and their look in the above picture reminds me of the Marauder's Map - "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good" ;-)

    1. Hahaha :D Yeah, see, I wished that it were that simple with these two. They both regurgitate, (sometimes back and forth which is just disgusting) they both do the humping and they both click like an overly wound up toy when they get their groove on. We once turned their rope swing upside down for a change, it has a fluffy tail on the end, and we regularly found Al'ar humping the thing. But when they start their sexytimes, it's mostly Al'ar that behaves as the female! So we're still stumped on their sexes. I wouldn't be surprised if it were two males, though.
And yeah, I took this picture a while ago, but I think this was the time that Anzu tried to catch my camera strap because it was dangly and fun... And nearly ripped the whole damned thing out of my hands XD
